Drivers Are Critical to Highway Safety

For commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers, the most important safety feature is YOU – the driver!

Each time you turn the key, you are responsible for your own safety, as well as the safety of all the people who share the road with you. The physical examination you take for your medical certificate confirms that you are healthy enough to safely perform the demanding job of a CMV driver and keep our roads safe.

Here's an overview on what we will be looking for during your DOT Medical Exam:

I'm on the road often, and my days off are important to me. I called DOT Medical Exams Plus and they had someone over on my schedule. My results made it to the state, and I was allowed to get this done on my off day. Thanks.

Common Questions

During the DOT physical you will be asked about:

Your medical history, including: If you’ve ever had any surgeries, or hospitalizations.
Any medicines you’re taking, including prescriptions and over-the-counter medicines.
Any health problems you’ve have, especially heart or blood pressure issues.
If you use tobacco, alcohol, or illegal substances.
If you’ve ever failed a drug test.
If you ever received less than a 2-year DOT medical clearance.

All interstate CMV drivers must have a physical examination at least every 2 years; however, the medical examiner may determine that you need more frequent examinations (for example, annually or every 6 months).

The National Registry program does not change how often you need to obtain a medical examination; it only requires that you go to a certified medical examiner.
